INITIATION TO NATURAL DYE

Indigo dyeing craftsmanship has grown from continent to continent with nuances.
In Senegal, it is the Bambara and Soninké Wolof who are specialists. They have developed techniques to vary the shades of indigo, from midnight blue to blue-violet, always with that mystical depth.
Each piece on display will have a label that tells its story, the meaning of the graphics, as well as the social role of those who wore it.
Because, what we learn in this exhibition, among other things, is that indigo, a deep blue tincture obtained from the leaves, is also endowed with medicinal and mystical virtues for the person who wears it.

For initiation, the gesture is mechanical, and has been done for generations.
With the dyer, you will start by tying the raw fabrics and immersing them in successive dye baths. From this moment, the different patterns are obtained depending on the choice of the dyer. Indigo blue is the most common color. You will of course be equipped with sturdy gloves, because the dye is a reaction that gives off a lot of heat.
Choose your colors yourself and your initiator can assist you with the expression in your choice and the dosage allows him to respect the range of colors chosen.
The base color determines the result, as several baths will be used in which the raw fabrics will be soaked.
The knots in the fabrics are cut or sometimes detached when stained.
After this step, they are laid out on the ground since the sun easily allows them to dry in record time.
The last step is to shake, fold and iron the fabrics with a technique that gives a lot of shine and shine to the dyed fabrics or the Bazin. At this point, the dye is ready and the Bazin is ready for the designer.
