Tortoise village - Kayar - Wrestling competition

We will leave this morning for a full day discovering.

This turtle protection center located in the special botanical reserve of Noflaye, is dedicated to the preservation and reproduction of turtles. This sanctuary offers the possibility of discovering dozens of species of Senegalese and African turtles, from tiny babies, freshly born, to giant turtles weighing more than 100 kg and being able to live up to 150 years..

We will continue to Kayar is a village located 60 km north of Dakar. Artisanal fishing is the main activity.

Every afternoon hundreds of long canoes, with colorful sides, unload on the beach tons of still wriggling fish, which will feed the population of the Cape Verde peninsula. At these times the beach which immediately turns into a real market, a festival of sounds, scents and colors.

It is here, in one of the main artisanal fishing ports of the country, that we have to wait for the return of the fishermen, when they throw themselves headlong into the foam of the bar. At the South of the fishing port, after the market, we will arrive at the processing wharf. There, the women salt, then dry in the sun thousands of fish placed on racks.

On the side, bags filled with dried fish await their export to the countries of the sub-region.

Continuation to the arena for a Senegalese wrestling competition

Wrestling is the National sport in Senegal and is a type of folk wrestling traditionally performed by the Serrere people here and parts of The Gambia.

The Senegalese form traditionally allows boxings, with the hands without gloves, the only one of the West African traditions to do so.

As a larger confederation and championship around wrestling has developed since the 1990s, Senegalese fighters now practice both forms, called officially traditional wrestling without strike, the simple one; and another for the striking version.

Be ready for a small, simple wrestling championship between visitors and locals.
