Goree Island Tour:
After breakfast, we will reach the port of Dakar and take our 20-minute ferry sailing to Goree Island
Land of martyrdom and suffering, Goree was an important slave transit center before their deportation to the Americas.
Titled a world heritage by UNESCO, our visit will start at the famous slave house, built by the Portuguese in 1176. This house is made of different cells: for men, women, children, and young girls.
We will attend a lecture by the curator in this last slave's house to know about the captives' life and observe the “Door of no return” through which millions and millions of enslaved Africans crossed on the way to slavery.
Let us discover this island and explore the usually quiet Streets, lined with mostly pastel colored colonial era buildings. Made of volcanic rock, we will walk to visit museums, markets, and its attractive sites
Goree was ruled in succession by the Portuguese, Dutch, English, and French; its architecture is characterized by the contrast between the grim slave-quarters and the elegant houses of the slave traders. Today, it continues to serve as a reminder of human exploitation and as a sanctuary for reconciliation.
Lunch and visit Mariama Bâ Elite high school for girls, named after the famous Senegalese writer.
Mariama Bâ High School was founded in 1977 by Leopold Sedar Senghor, the first president of Senegal, and was named after Mariama Bâ, who was a novelist, teacher, and feminist who struggled for women’s rights in Senegal.
The school admits girls who obtained the highest scores during the national secondary school entrance exam.
Each year, about 35 young girls from Senegal's 14 regions are allowed to attend the school for the rest of their high school studies.
Sightseeing around and sail back to Dakar.
